New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
